CHARACTER NAME Jack "Ace" Hart
HOUSE Victory
TYPE Artifact
POSITION Student
ABILITIES/POWERS Personal time manipulation. Stuff like:
- Bend Time: briefly slow everyone/thing except the user in the room (e.g. walk up to three people, bend time, fire three bullets, time un-bends and three people get shot simultaneously)
- Rewind Time: temporarily reverse changes to one's self (e.g. get stabbed, rewind to pre-stabbing, get to hospital before releasing the rewind and being re-stabbed in safety)
- Foresight: see what's going to happen in the next couple of seconds and avoid it. In practice, it would probably work like this (stolen from Imeeji): "If you play something in a thread, a character with this power can use their power to see it as a vision, so they can react to that "vision"-- go up two comments and replay that sequence of events, with FORESIGHT in the tag header. Can only be used once per happening-- they can't repeat the same five seconds 60 times, just once."
- probably more as I think of things
All of it's personal and short-term. No actual time travel. Having a Catalyst and progressively higher levels of sync % would be needed for Ace to access the more complex abilities reliably or at all. Bend Time is the always immediately available and he's gotten quite good at it even without a Catalyst. (Though it still shorts out at random times. Sucks to be single!)
In object form he is a pocket watch and can additionally tell the time.
CHARACTER 'STORY' Ten years ago, Regina and Basil Hart were a powerful and well-respected Guardian pair with a reputation for honor, courage, and loyalty -- the perfect knight and her sword. They had a son, Jack, who they affectionately nicknamed Ace. While traveling together, a powerful Anomaly manifested. Telling Ace to stay put and out of the way, Regina and Basil set off to face this threat. There was an enormous amount of press around the incident: the Harts died destroying the Anomaly, and were famously found dead in each other's arms.
The battle left a good chunk of the area destroyed, and with the Harts being from out of town and neither having any surviving relatives, no one gave much thought to Ace, assuming he had died. Ace, used to fending for himself while his parents were away on Guardian business, continued to do so as best he could when they didn't return for him.
A few months later, Julius Monrey found him living on the street and took him in. Over the next few years, they formed a happy family of two. Neither thought much of Ace turning out to be an Artifact until a shady government agency turned up on their doorstep when Ace was 12, attracted by Ace's rare time powers and the potential implied by his highly ranked parents. Since Julius had never filed any official paperwork to adopt him, Ace was conveniently declared a ward of the state and whisked away to Pinnacle for training and education.
He immediately tried to run away.
The shady government agency stopped further escape attempts by threatening to destroy Julius' life. As a compromise, he and Julius were allowed to exchange (heavily monitored) letters every other month. This, along with Julius' (not entirely willing) encouragement, was enough to make Ace reluctantly stay put and half-heartedly play along with school. But in his senior year he received a very odd and worrying letter from Julius - and the next letter failed to arrive at all. Ace ran away again, hiding and working his way back to Julius. It took a while because, as he soon learned, Julius had been harassed from job after job due to continually trying to get back custody of Ace. When Ace finally tracked him down, he found that Julius had died not long after his final letter.
At this point, Ace was hauled back to Pinnacle to repeat his senior year. He was 18, legally an adult, and ready to peace the fuck out with or without a diploma. But it was made very clear he would not be allowed to leave campus again until he graduated properly. And "graduated" was very clearly a euphemism for "paired up with a Catalyst or otherwise controllable." Since he was clearly a flight risk, he also had a tracker slapped on him to be extra sure he couldn't leave the campus boundaries.
On paper, he's an orphan with high potential who has been kindly sponsored by a government scholarship, partly to honor his parents for laying down their lives in the line of duty. He's really not a great student, though: his grades are indifferent and his records are a litany of teachers despairing of his refusal to apply himself, having a volatile and anti-social personality, and having many conflicts with other students or teachers. In private shady government agency files, he's still considered a promising recruit (perhaps this rebelliousness is just a phase?) but patience is wearing thin.
And, after losing Julius and being more or less imprisoned on campus... Ace's attitude is very unlikely to improve.
PERSONALITY:
- bitter and angry at Pinnacle
- ditto shady government agency (the Guardians?)
- ditto at being an Artifact
- grieving over losing Julius and not processing it well at all
- guilt-stricken at not being there when Julius needed him
- if you're a Catalyst he probably hates you on principle no offense
- similar to Ace as I've played him elsewhere, he does have a friendly and cheerful side, so it's not impossible for him to have gotten along with classmates, at least pre-Julius death. But smol angry Ace is more volatile, with less of a leash on his temper (and other emotions). With Julius dead, he's starting off in a bad place and has less to lose.
RELATIONSHIPS:
- Regina & Basil Hart: They frequently left him with nannies due to traveling on Guardian business. He has few memories of his parents and even less affection. If anything, he's come to resent them for how often their deaths have been used in attempted guilt-trips. Deceased.
- Julius Monrey: A kindly, absent-minded, and frail professor of literature who had nothing at all to do with this Artifact/Catalyst business. Not the best guardian, truthfully. But he cared very much for Ace. Deceased. :(
