The memory opens mid-firefight, as Ace ducks around a corner in the middle of a gaudily decorated hedge maze. For once, he’s not carrying a sword, but rather a gun; black and grey and rather over-embellished, but it certainly does the job. There’s sounds of running feet and shouting, steadily getting closer.
Ace moves, he easily ducks and returns fire, darting to and fro among the hedges as his pursuers closing in. He doesn’t seem frightened at all, just focused and calm, still smiling. Eventually he draws (or is chased?) into an open area of the maze, where he's surrounded.
Still Ace doesn't seem perturbed; he gets off two shots and then his gun blurs in his hands, changing shape and becoming a sword. As in his previous fighting memory, facing off against guns doesn't seem to faze him, he outright dodges the bullets and picks off his attackers without mercy. Even the ones who try to turn tail and run are not spared.
In the silence that follows the fight, black-uniformed guards and maids in black uniforms covered in red heart accents emerge from the sidelines. (They seem strangely identical and different to distinguish. Ace's perspective is constantly shifting throughout the memory, but you could swear there's something strange about their faces, something about the eyes...)
Up high to the side, out of Ace’s field of vision, comes a derisive voice.
"All that talk, and in the end they couldn't put a scratch on you."
Ace’s gaze pans up. Seated on top of the one of the hedges is a man with white hair and rabbit ears, wearing a red plaid jacket and an enormous pocket watch on a chain slung across his chest like a purse. "Mr. Rabbit is so mean, just watching while I'm attacked. I might have been hurt, you know~"
Mr. Rabbit snorts. "If only."
Ace's expression turns thoughtful. "Hmm~ Could it be that they were Mr. Rabbit's friends? After all, it seems like you talked with them quite a bit. Ahaha, but Mr. Rabbit's personality is too bad for him to have any friends, right?"
Now Mr. Rabbit glares down at him, red eyes cold. "What are you implying?"
Ace smiles back blandly. "Can't you guess?"
This apparently infuriates Mr. Rabbit into jumping off the hedge. His giant pocket watch is in his hand; it blurs, and becomes a handgun. A little more not-so-friendly banter ends with Mr. Rabbit leveling his gun at Ace and firing.
Ace dodges, naturally, sword already in hand; now Mr. Rabbit makes a spirited attempt to kill Ace and Ace defends himself. He doesn’t seem to be taking the fight very seriously, casually dodging or deflecting all the bullets, occasionally taking a swing if he can get in range. His laugh has a little mocking edge to it, as if it is just so precious that Mr. Rabbit thinks he can touch him.
Various guards and servants are trying to stay out of range while simultaneously getting the fight to stop.
"P-Prime Minister--!"
"Sir, please..."
"The queen...!"
One of the guards stumbles a little too close. Apparently infuriated by this interruption, however trivial, Mr. Rabbit brings his gun around to fire at the terrified man--but before he can even begin to pull the trigger, Ace’s sword whips over his shoulder from behind, blade stopping snug against his throat.
"Mr. Rabbit," Ace says, still smiling, "you really need to work on your temper."
There’s a beat of silence. Two beats. Then Mr. Rabbit lowers his gun, the weapon blurring back into the giant pocket watch that he hangs back on its chain. Ace also lowers and sheaths his sword.
"As usual, you only do your job when it's convenient for you," Mr. Rabbit says scornfully.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Ace replies cheerfully. Yet, there's a sharpness to his smile, and his eyes are cold. "Don't I always do my job?"
For a moment it looks like Mr. Rabbit will pull his gun out again; the servants and guards are already trying to edge away without looking like they’re running. But instead, he just snarls "Clean up this mess!" before stalking away.
As the servants begin nervously hacking at the shot-up hedges, and the guards drag away the bodies, Ace gazes around thoughtfully at the paths branching away through the maze. "Now, which way is it to the Clocktower," he muses. "Ahhh, that annoying Mr. Rabbit... I'm really going to be late now."
