The Unquiet Dead: Be a Descendant!

So hey! Ace is the Troubled Ancestor, a very old ghost who's been hanging around Harrogate since the 1897 Theater Fire, looking after his descendants. That's where you come in! In order to be an ancestor, Ace needs some descendants to look after. Here is some info about how the being-a-descendant thing.

Hauntings

As one of Ace's descendants, your character has been haunted by Ace for more or less their entire life. He is driven by protectiveness and loyalty, and while he is careful not to be too obvious, he is also not shy about using his powers to intervene when necessary.

His protectiveness has manifested in benign and not-so-benign ways. For example, perhaps you lost you car keys and he nudged them back to an obvious place so you could find them again. Perhaps you were bullied as a child and not long after all your bullies had terrible accidents. Ace additionally has the plot ability to reach across the divide between the living and the dead to warn his descendants in times of crisis. We can put our heads together to come up with custom events tailored to your backstory!

It's up to you how your character would react to his little interventions over their life. Do they believe in the family ghost? Do they believe it's a ghost but some other spirit entirely? Do they think it's all just luck and happenstance? It's up to you~

Descendant

Descendants have the option of being aware that they're related to each other (up to you guys how closely) or not being aware of any relation. Those who know they are of the same family would have some interesting family lore to share with each other. Those who are not related would not be aware of that lore.

Stories

Due to how long Ace has been around, there are a TON of ghost stories about him, often attributed to multiple different spirits rather than just one bored trouble-maker. Some are funny, some more spooooooky coincidences, and some are more like campfire horror stories. Not all of them are true.

Those stories passed down by his direct descendants tend to believe that he is actually the Monrey family patriarch, though some also point out that Julius Monrey was famously non-violent so that doesn't really match the more violent stories. It is mystery~

Malin knows about the family ghost, knows the stories, and knows the relatives, but despite of all the evidence has always been a bit sceptical. Look, there's a perfectly reasonable explanation why all those things happen, right? Right?

Uh. She'd like to believe that, anyway. But when she met a cute girl that turned out to be very interested in her ancestor (but was cute anyway so they started dating), she started to reach out to those of her relatives whom she knew to have had received interventions by him as well, so all other descendants who are in the know might have been contacted by her recently.

Works for me! In the family backstory I have, the ghost stories kinda go back to the aftermath of the fire when Julius Monrey, a local clockmaker, settled down with an out-of-town girl who was in the family way. Kinda scandalous but honestly not a big deal in the wake of the theater fire. By all accounts they had a loving marriage and their descendants have hung around Harrogate ever since.

Ace won't mind not being believed in. He still loev Malin as one of his kids (it's too weird to say great-great-great-whatever-grandkid...). He probably does not approve of Jolie though. People who are interested in the cult can only mean trouble. Don't do it, Malin!

I'd be game for Anafiel Delaunay to be one of the descendants!

His infiltration's name is Anton Delaney and his Harrogate backstory steals liberally from Alcuin's real backstory involves him being orphaned at the age of six when his single mother died from something that isn't vikings some sort of violence idk yet. He then grew up to join the army and ended up as a secret agent.

Anyway, I figure that some dude from the Monrey family can be the infiltration's father whose broke up with his mom before he was born. (Since Delaunay's original surname before he got disinherited starts with 'Mon' it feels Quite Fitting to me.)

He's one of the MI6 agents who're in town as pretend health inspectors and he doesn't exactly believe in ghosts (at least coming in to town) so this has the potential to get Interesting.

Aww, Anton. Ace probably tried to haunt him and look after him after the accident that he couldn't prevent but, there's only so much he can do. He was probably sad to see Anton go and will be so happy to see him back.

Maybe in the ~mysteriously incident~ where he was orphaned, Ace did a spooky ghost thing to save Anton but couldn't save his mother? Just to make things a bit more interesting regarding ghosts and such.

I feel like he might have ended up in foster care away from Harrogate after that, so this is literally the first time he's been back in roughly thirty years. Hopefully Ace will still recognize him!

I guess we wanted to maximum tropes, maybe he has some kind of memento from his mom that he's held on to...? Like a piece of jewelry or something. Or some kind of birthmark. That would make it easy for Ace to put two and two together.

Ooooh, yeah. Maybe a ring that was, like, the only thing her Monrey boyfriend gave her before he ran off.

Also I don't think he has any Significant Others (Patriotism fills that place in his heart) but he does have a partner named Danielle Sigal who outside the Jaunt is one Dakki Sigal.

I dunno if work partners are enough to be worth Ace's sustained attention, but he might check in on her out of curiosity at some point~ :3c
